2007 Big Agnes Tents: Emerald Mountain

Big Agnes Emerald Mountain TentAnother year, another tent I must have. Last year Big Agnes lightened up their Seedhouse Superlight tents, making them two of the lightest double wall tents around. The Seedhouse SL 2 was just under 3lbs and their 1 person Superlight was only 2lbs 6oz! They aslo introduced the Seedhouse Superlight 3 tent which sleeps 3 but was lighter than most 2 person tents. With the Superlight tents came sacrifice, and that sacrifice was space. Although you can sleep 2 people in the 2 person Superlight tent, it is a bit tight. Is there a tent that’s lightweight that doesn’t sleep like a can of sardines? Yes, my granola friends, there is. The eagle has landed and hatched the 2007 Big Agnes Emerald Mountain Tent. Slender, voluptuous, sexy…I could go on for minutes. Late night fantasies high in the Tetons have been realized. The Emerald Mountain 2 person tent comes in at 4lbs 3oz. That’s not great on weight, but get this. Two doors and 22 sq ft of vestibule space! Also, the big difference is in the length. This tent is 7′ 6″ from end to end, which should be enough length for just about anyone. The Emerald Mountain 3 gets even more interesting. This 3 person lightweight has 44 sq ft of floor space. The Seedhouse Superlight 3 only had 36. It also comes with 2 doors, 7′ 6″ of length and only 5lbs! Compare this to the MSR Mutha Hubba which has only 40 sq ft of space and comes in at 6lbs 12oz or the Sierra Designs Baku 3 tent which has 42 sq ft and weights 5lb 6oz.

    HI,

We are currently comparing the Emerald Mountain with the Hubba Hubba that we were about to buy and the chips are falling on the side of the big agnes version (big plus: it’s not orange). But, they’re not available in Oz, so we have been comparing stats online. The only hard thing to work out is how much of the tent would give a head height of 37″ or more – can two people sit up facing each other, to play cards for example?

If you’ve tried the tent out, you might be able to help.

    Many thanks
    Cath

The Emerald Mountain tent has a head height of 42″ at the front and it tapers as it goes back. Two people could definitely sit up facing each other and play cards in both the Emerald Mountain and Hubba Hubba. The tents are very similar. About 4 lbs 10 oz each, double doors, 28 sq ft, 1 pole design, etc.. The Emerald Mountain 2 does have 5 sq ft more room of vestibule area. The Emerald also has the optional vestibule addition that adds a ton of space. The Emerald does also have the cool factor. The new Emerald tents are pretty much the only innovative design I’ve seen the past couple of years, everyone else seems to be just copying one another. The color is also better. Downside, the Emerald is $50 more. I don’t think you can go wrong with this one as both tents are great.

    Thanks for the tip.

Our Emerald Mtn arrived the other day and we took it out for a spin on the weekend – very happy so far and yes, two people can sit up in it with plenty of room. It packs down nice and small in a compression sack too (other than the poles of course). The only minor gripe is the side zip on the larger vestibule – for some reason this zipper doesn’t have a pull on the inside, just the outside. I’m going to see if I can rig something up that will work.

    Anyhoo, the advice was appreciated.

    Cheers
